Putting together the perfect ensemble can feel like an elusive quest, even when your closet is brimming with choices. If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a seemingly endless array of garments but feeling like you have nothing to wear — you’re not alone.
Overcoming this feeling requires delving into the underlying reasons why you’re faced with the perpetual conundrum of having nothing to wear. Whether it’s an overabundance of trendy pieces, a lack of versatile basics, or an attachment to clothes long past their prime, the factors at play are both varied and surmountable.
Read on to discover the five common culprits and uncover solutions that will help you build a more satisfying, functional, and timeless wardrobe. Make sure to save this post for later or follow me on Instagram.
Why you have nothing to wear
1. You buy too many trendy pieces.
Instead, opt for pieces that fit your personal style and will be timeless – they don’t have to be classic if that’s not you or boring, but pieces that have longevity.
2. You only buy pieces for specific occasions.
Instead, buy pieces that have multiple purposes like a great blazer or dress that can be dressed up or down. Need something formal or for a specific occasion? Borrow from a friend, rent or hit the thrift shop.
3. You buy in quantity rather than quality.
I used to be so guilty of this one! Instead, make a list of the hero pieces you want to add to vour wardrobe and intentionally save for those items. It will have a bigger impact instead of a ton of ho hum items.
4. You don’t have enough basics.
Starting at your closet and not knowing what to wear? It might be that you don’t have enough foundational pieces to build an outfit. Make a list of what’s missing: A great white tee? A pair of trousers? Flat shoes for walking? Target adding those to your wardrobe first.
5. You hold onto clothes that no longer fit or suit you.
It’s ok to hang onto some sentimental pieces or a couple pairs of jeans if you fluctuate sizes. I still have my prom dress! However, if there’s more than a few items taking up space and mental clutter, opt to consciously declutter your wardrobe.
