It’s that time of year again! Transitioning into a new season means reevaluating your wardrobe with a closet refresh in preparation for a change in weather.
I’m sharing some tips on how to prep and edit your wardrobe for the spring season.
For your closet refresh, gather all of your clothes together so you can see everything
Whether it’s in the closet or dumping all of your items on your bed, make sure all your items are in one place so you have a full view of your inventory to edit.
Group your clothing by category
Sorting all of your clothing by item type allows you to see what you have the most of and where there might be gaps. If there are gaps, it can help you create a shopping list so you can be intentional with your purchases and avoid overbuying. It will also help you determine which items are staples versus the ones you don’t reach for often and maybe need to consider parting with or styling in new ways.
Tip: If you love a particular style and wear it weekly, it’s OK to have multiples. Having similar options allows you to rotate, keeping your most loved items in better condition and extending their lifecycle.
Sort your items
It’s time to review each piece of clothes and then sort it into one of three categories: Yes, No, Maybe.
Things to consider when reviewing all of your pieces:
– Have you worn it in the last year?
– Does it go with your current style or your style goals for the year?
– Do you see yourself reaching for it in the upcoming seasons?
– If you have multiple of one style, is there one you reach for more often?
If the item is a No, consider selling, donating or upcycling it. Read my tips for selling clothes second hand, repurposing or altering them. If the item is a Maybe, store it for three to six months and reevaluate at your next closet refresh.
Refresh the pieces that your keeping
To keep your clothes in tip top shape, you should have a few basic items on hand:
– Lint roller: Give yourself a quick once over before you head out of the house to ensure you’re lint free.
– Steamer: A quicker and simpler way to ensure your garments are wrinkle-free.
– Fabric shaver: Your garments can pill over time, especially in high contact areas like under arms and where your bag rubs. Make your garment look new by shaving off the excess fabric.
– Shoe cleaner and brush: To avoid long-term stains, give your shoes a quick clean before you put them away. I swear by Jason Markk products.
Time to get dressed
With your wardrobe ready for the new season, it’s time to get dressed!
Think differently about how you style your existing items. Don’t save your occasion wear for special events. Incorporate it into everyday outfits and get a fresh perspective on how and when your clothes should be worn.
Or consider putting together a seasonal capsule wardrobe to make getting ready a breeze. I’ll be sharing how I put together my spring capsule wardrobe so stay tuned!
