Ready for your next read but stumped on what to pick up? Let this list of March’s reading recommendations be your guide.
Sharing three standout reads that cover an array of scenarios, including a woman raising her family during the Great Depression, the dynamics and deadly competition between three brothers, and a Chinese woman desperate to fit into her new American life.
White Ivy
By Susie Yang
One of my favourite reads to date. Follows Ivy Lin who immigrates to Massachusetts from China as a young child. It chronicles her ruthless pursuit of the American Dream and her deep desires to assimilate, get rich and be loved.
At its heart is a love triangle between Ivey, Gideon, the All-American boy she believes is key to realizing her dreams, and Roux, her neighbour and fellow immigrant who understands her inner motivations. The surprise ending had me reading way past my bedtime.
The Four Winds
By Kristin Hannah
If you’re interested in historical fiction or just love Kristin Hannah, then this is for you. The Four Winds follows the life of Elsa, a well-to-do woman who is thrown out of her home after she becomes pregnant and must make a life for herself and family on the Great Plains in Texas during The Great Depression.
I loved experiencing a well known time period from the less talked about perspective of a woman and enjoyed it as an audiobook, which featured local accents making you feel closer to the characters. A reminder of the resilience and tenacity of women and the boundless love of mothers.
Our Little Cruelties
By Liz Nugent
For fans of Lisa Jewell and Paula Hawkins, this grim thriller follows three brothers with only two left standing by the end. It explores the idea that not all siblings are loved equally and how the little cruelties of sibling rivalry can push people to commit heinous acts.
Told from the perspective of each of the brothers through flashbacks leading up to the death of one of the three while the reader tries to work out who’s left alive. If you enjoy this read, I highly encourage you to try her novel, Lying in Wait.
