Sick of paying exorbitant dry cleaning bills, but also despise hand-washing your clothes? Taking care of your wardrobe can feel like a neverending to-do list. Admittedly, I was stuck in a cycle of avoiding wearing my dry clean only clothes and routinely neglecting my growing pile of hand-washing. If I couldn’t toss the garment in the laundry machine, it wouldn’t leave my closet. There seemed to be no simple solution until I discovered Soak laundry detergent, the best laundry detergent for hand-washing your clothes.
Soak is a small women-owned and -led Canadian company that manufactures its eco-friendly products in Ontario. What truly sets Soak apart is its innovative no-rinse formula. The ease of use is unparalleled – simply soak, squeeze, and let your items air dry.
The detergents are made with no harsh chemicals or overwhelming fragrances and a fragrance free option is available. The formula is safe to use on anything in your closet — from hand-knitted sweaters to fine lingerie to baby clothes to swimwear — and can even be used to shampoo your pet! If you have super sensitive skin and need to confirm what’s in the bottle, Soak shares a full list of ingredients on their website.
How to Use
To use, you add a small amount of Soak to warm water then add your garment, swirl it around and then leave it to soak for 15 minutes. Afterwards, I like to roll my garment in a towel to gently squeeze out the excess water before I lay it flat to dry. If you’re new to hand-washing clothes, I’ve previously shared my full process.
Since Soak is a low-suds liquid, the dirt and detergent come out in the water, and whatever is left in your clothing item evaporates. After squeezing out the water, all that’s left behind is a hint of fragrance that dissipates over time. Multitasking on laundry day and leave your clothes soaking for more than 15 minutes? No problem! This causes zero harm to your clothes.
Using Soak means no more dry cleaning, no more cumbersome hand-washing and no more wasted water on rinsing. Plus, the formula is great for spot treatments before you hand-wash or add your item to the laundry machine. I even use it to hand-wash my baseball hats after a sweaty round of golf. When I say my laundry routine has been transformed, I mean it.
I’m also a big fan of their Flatter spray, a naturally-derived wrinkle release spray. It’s a great alternative to ironing or if you simply need to freshen up your clothes in between wears. I like to bring a small size with me when I travel so my clothes are always crease-free and fresh.
