I’ve just returned from two weeks on the east coast — where I absolutely wore my knit sweater daily — and now it’s suddenly summer! The sudden shift in temperature means it’s time to build out my summer capsule wardrobe.
If you’re new to the concept of a capsule wardrobe, it’s about building a wardrobe of high quality pieces that work interchangeably together for a variety of events and weather. A capsule wardrobe will help you look chic, limit the decisions you have to make over what to wear and help you make multiple outfits with what you already own!
Tips for building your summer capsule wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe is about quality over quantity, so invest in pieces that fit well, are versatile, and can be worn in a variety of settings.
- Look for foundational pieces in summer appropriate fabrics: Linen, organic cotton, silk, etc.
- Choose neutral colours or complementary colours if you prefer a colourful wardrobe!
- Opt for multipurpose pieces (i.e., a bathing suit that could also work as a bodysuit or a button down that works for the office as much as for a weekend patio drink.)
- Ensure there is a balance of tops, bottoms, layers, accessories and shoes
- Consider if each piece reflects who you are and the image you want to portray. After all, dressing should be fun!
The pieces you’ll need to get started
A summer capsule wardrobe should include a selection of versatile, season-appropriate garments and accessories that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.
The wardrobe should be as individual as you are so don’t feel inclined to include every piece I recommend. Here are the 25 items to help you get started:
- White tank
- Black tank
- White tee
- Black tee
- Tailored short
- Denim short
- Linen pant
- Oversized button down
- Dress x 2
- Jeans
- White jeans
- Light knit sweater
- Jean jacket
- Bathing suit
- Belt
- Flat sandals
- Sneakers
- Dressy sandals
- Tote or basket bag
- Handbag
- Sunglasses
- Sun hat
- Baseball cap
- Jewellery
You may have noticed something radical: I didn’t include a vest/waistcoat on this list. Yes, it’s seemingly everywhere at the moment and you can absolutely include one in your summer capsule. But, if you don’t already have one then don’t feel like you need to fill the gap! The intention of the capsule is to use the items you have, experiment with new styling and appreciate the variety you can get from your existing pieces.
Sustainable brands to consider when building your capsule wardrobe
You likely already have all the items you need in your closet to build your summer capsule. If you spotted some gaps or an item is longer fitting the way you want, I’m sharing some options from ethical and sustainable brands to consider — brands that are better for people, animals and our planet. I hope it helps you make a more meaningful choice. This post contains affiliate links.
