In a world that constantly encourages us to buy more, the idea of taking a break from shopping can seem daunting. However, pausing or reducing any buying can have immense benefits beyond saving you some cash. It can have a transformative impact on your finances, mental well-being, lifestyle, the environment and even your social life. Improving all these aspects is why I committed to the No New Clothes Challenge for my second summer.
Remake’s annual No New Clothes Challenge is a 90-day commitment to buy no new clothes—whether that’s buying nothing at all or only secondhand. The purpose of this challenge is to stop and consider the values we want to wear, and the role we can play in addressing overconsumption to change the fashion industry.
At the start of the year, I attempted a 90-Day No Buy to reset my shopping habits after a particularly spendy 2023. But, I failed. I managed to go through January and February without purchasing anything but broke down in March and added a few items to my wardrobe. Happily, they were all secondhand. Then came the Toronto Vintage Show in April and a quick jaunt to Montreal in May where I fully indulged in its superb secondhand and vintage scene. Suddenly, I’d picked up another 15 items.
With my closet busting, my bank card too frequently in use, and a move to Austin on the horizon, I knew it was time to pause on the shopping again. Rather than go cold turkey, I committed to only purchasing secondhand items and ones from my wish list that needed to also work in a new climate.
Let’s explore some of the transformative impacts this challenge can have on your finances, mental well-being, environment, lifestyle, and social life.
The benefits of a shopping pause
Financial Benefits
Savings Accumulation: When you decide not to spend money on new clothes for three months, the savings can be substantial. This money can be redirected towards paying off debts, investing, or building an emergency fund. The No New Clothes Challenge provides a clear path to boost your financial health. I ended up reducing my clothing spend by 75%!!
Improved Budgeting: This challenge gives you an opportunity to analyze your spending habits. By tracking what you’re not spending, you can identify areas where you typically overspend, helping you develop better budgeting practices in the long run.
Psychological Benefits
Reduced Stress: The constant pressure to keep up with fashion trends and the endless decisions involved in shopping can be stressful. I was shocked at how much mental capacity I was putting towards scrolling marketing emails, websites, etc. A break from shopping can alleviate this pressure, leading to a more relaxed state of mind.
Increased Mindfulness: The challenge encourages mindful consumption. By taking a step back, you become more aware of your needs versus wants, leading to more intentional and thoughtful purchasing decisions in the future. I was averaging four new-to-me items per month before the challenge and reduced it to one per month.
Environmental Benefits
Lower Carbon Footprint: The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world. By not purchasing new clothing, especially fast fashion, you reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet.
Less Waste: Every new item of clothing comes with packaging and, eventually, disposal. By reducing the number of new items you bring into your home, you contribute less to landfills and help mitigate the environmental impact of waste.
Lifestyle Benefits
Decluttering: Without new items constantly entering your space, you’ll find it easier to keep your home organized and clutter-free. This can lead to a more peaceful and efficient living environment. This was especially helpful for me as I prepared for an international move.
Focus on Experiences: With less emphasis on acquiring material goods, you may find yourself with more time and resources to invest in experiences and activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s taking a class, traveling, or spending time with loved ones, these experiences often provide more lasting happiness than new clothes. I spent my 90 Days focusing more on what brings me true happiness: golfing, reading and spending more time with loved ones.
Social Benefits
Setting an Example: By committing to the No New Clothes Challenge, you can inspire others to reflect on their own consumption habits. Your actions can motivate friends and family to adopt more sustainable practices as well. I always get a hit of joy when my friends and community tell me I’ve inspired them to try the challenge!
Enhanced Relationships: With less focus on shopping, you might discover more opportunities to connect with family and friends. Spending quality time with loved ones can strengthen relationships and create lasting memories. Reduced time shopping meant I had way more hours in the week to spend with friends and family.
What I did buy during the No New Clothes Challenge
Throughout the challenge, I wanted to stick to my values like purchasing secondhand first and slowing down my shopping by only buying items on my wishlist. I’m moving from Toronto to Austin soon so anything new-to-me has to work in a much warmer climate. Cue natural fibers and lighter shades.
I added four items to my wardrobe over the 90 days and spent $400. I reduced my usual shopping spend and the amount of monthly items I was purchasing by 75% (my bank account was so applauding.). Plus, by buying secondhand first, I saved 70% off the retail price of the items I selected. Here’s what I bought:
- Veronica Beard – Taylor Wide-leg Jean
- The Frankie Shop – Pleated Trousers
- By Far – Rachel Bag
- Criss Cross Tank
